IntroductionClitoria ternatea, also known as butterfly pea, blue pea, Cordofan pea and Asian pigeonwings, is a plant species belonging to the Fabaceae (pea) family. The flowers of this vine have the shape of human female genitals, hence the Latin name of the genus "Clitoria", from "clitoris".
Uses of Clitoria ternateaIn Southeast Asia the flowers are also used to colour food.
How to use Clitoria ternateaAdd three or four flower plumes to a glass of water, a cocktail drink or juice for a nice blue or purple colour. As a tea (on its own) it tastes slightly like black tea; not unpleasant but not an especially strong taste. Let the tea steep for 10 to 15 minutes.
