Introduction

The leaves of as many as 15 species of Epimedium are used as the herb known as yin yang huo in China. "Yin yang huo" is usually translated as horny goat weed because the Chinese characters literally mean, "obscene goat leaves of pulse plants." Other common names include barrenwort, bishop's hat, fairy wings, rowdy lamb herb and randy beef grass. Horny goat weed is an herb that has been a traditional remedy in China for centuries. It’s used for low libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, pain, and other conditions.

Effects of horny goat weed

Some men use horny goat weed for sexual performance problems including erectile dysfunction and involuntary ejaculation. It is also used to arouse sexual desire in both sexes.

How to use horny goat weed

The herb can be decocted in water for an oral dose, or macerated in wine for an infusion. Most herbal practitioners recommend 6-12 grams of epimedium.

Warning

Horny goat weed may cause upset stomach and dry mouth. In some, horny goat weed may result in irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, nosebleeds, and mood changes. Very high doses have been linked to spasms and respiratory failure. If you take any medicines or supplements regularly, talk to your doctor before you start using horny goat weed. It could interact with drugs like blood thinners, aspirin, birth control pills, antidepressants, treatments for immune disorders and thyroid problems, and medicines that lower blood pressure or cholesterol.
