Lepidium meyenii, known commonly as maca, is plant of the crucifer family native to the high Andes of Peru around Lake Junin. The growth habit, size, and proportions of maca are roughly similar to those of the radish and the turnip, to which it is related. It has been an important traditional plant in Peru for the last 2000 years. It is cited that maca was eaten by Inca imperial warriors before battles.

Effects of maca

It is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and iron, and contains trace minerals, including zinc, iodine, copper, selenium, bismuth, manganese and silica, as well as B vitamins. Studies have shown that Maca may help to increase aphrodisiac activity, libido, increase in energy levels, muscle strength, stamina and endurance in male and female.

How to use maca

Add some maca root powder to you favourite drink. In herbal medicine powders are generally recommended at dosages of 5-20g daily.
