Product information

Introduction

Passiflora incarnata, commonly known as maypop, purple passionflower, wild apricot and wild passion vine, is a fast growing perennial vine with climbing or trailing stems. It is a common wildflower in the southern United States. The Cherokee in the Tennessee area called it ocoee; the Ocoee River and valley are named after this plant.

Many species of passionflower have been found to contain beta-carboline harmala alkaloids, which are MAO inhibitors. The flower and fruit have only traces of these chemicals but the leaves and the roots are often more potent and have been used to potentiate the effects of mind-altering drugs. The most common of these alkaloids are harman, harmaline and harmine.
