IntroductionThe kola nut (colanut) is the fruit of the kola tree, a genus (Cola) of trees that are native to the tropical rainforests of Africa. The kola nut has a bitter flavor and contains caffeine. It is chewed in many West African cultures, individually or in a group setting. Kola nuts are perhaps best known to Western culture as a flavouring ingredient and one of the sources of caffeine in cola and other similarly flavoured beverages, although the use of kola (or kola flavoring) in commercial cola drinks has become uncommon.
Effects of kola nutKola nut is a strong stimulant. Common effects include increased energy, improved concentration and reduced hunger. Because kola nut withdraws energy from the body in many ways, it's also used for weight loss in addition to a diet.
How to use kola nutWhole nuts are to be chewed, preferably ground. The best way is to mix it with lime (just like Betel nut). You can also add a teaspoon of powdered nuts to you favorite hot beverage or soft drink. For a real energy kick use 2 teaspoons. The recommended dosage is 2-6 grams. Kola nut can be combined with Guarana.
WarningAlthough some side effects can occur, just as when taking coffee, cola nut is considered safe. Taking Kola nut late in the evening might result in not being able to sleep. Long and intensive usage might lead to addiction, sleeplessness, nervousness or increased blood pressure.
