About ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera) is a plant species in the nightshade family. The shrub can grow up to one and a half metres high and can be found throughout Africa, the Mediterranean, South Asia and Mauritius. The roots have a liquorice-like taste and have been used for thousands of years in traditional Indian herbal medicine of Ayurveda. The Sanskrit name ashwa (horse) gandha (smell) refers to the typical smell of the fresh root.

Our ashwaganda root is 100% pure, without added substances. An important advantage of this is that you can use the entire root, in contrast to extracts where a single substance is filtered from the roots.

Effects of ashwagandha

The use of ashwagandha has a special feature: it is an adaptogen. Body and mind are, as it were, balanced with each other. Are you travelling and nervous before your flight, or before arriving at your destination? A capsule with ashwagandha can help you get into a more stable state of mind. Moreover, the herb can give you more energy.

Active substances

The main active substances in the plant are withanolides, with withaferin A in particular. These components are similar in effect to the main component of Panax ginseng, which is why ashwaganda is sometimes called Indian ginseng. Withanolides are found in all plants of the nightshade family, but in the Withanaia somnifera the highest concentrations are found.

Use

Traditionally, ashwaganda roots are chewed. However, you can use ashwagandha in various other ways, for example in capsules or added to a glass of fruit juice, a milkshake or a cup of tea. The shredded variety can be used to make tea.

We recommend using ashwagandha daily for a longer period of time. However, it is advisable to take a few weeks rest after each month. The recommended dose is 250 mg twice a day before meals.

Storage advice

Store ashwagandha in its original packaging in a dry and cool place, out of the reach of children.
