About calamus (Acorus calamus)
Acorus calamus (better known as sweet flag or just calamus) is a perennial marsh plant with grassy stems that grow up to 5 meters high. Sweet flag occurs naturally in India and southern China, but now also in Europe and North America, where it was imported by man. In India the plant flowers from April to June; in Central Europe from June to July.
After harvesting, the roots are dried, after which they are used for many different purposes. Besides being used as a stimulant, the roots are used as a seasoning in various dishes to replace ginger, nutmeg or cinnamon. The herb can also be found in wines, absinthe and other spirits.
Effects of sweet flag
The effect of sweet flag depends on the amount you use. A small dose of the dried root is stimulating and euphoric, while larger amounts can lead to changes in perception and eventually even hallucinations.
For a clear, energized feeling, you can dissolve 1 to 2 teaspoons of powder in a glass of hot water or fruit juice. On an empty stomach it has a stronger effect. For a mind-altering effect, increase the dosage as needed.
In addition, calamus tea is also extremely tasty, with a fine spicy flavour that resembles cinnamon. The smell of the tea is also very pleasant.
Store sweet flag in its original packaging in a dry and cool place, out of the reach of children.
