Psychotria viridis (chacruna)

The plant species Psychotria viridis (chacruna) comes from the lowlands of the Amazon. It grows mainly in Peru, in the warm tropical regions of both hemispheres. Chacruna comes from the Quechua word "chaqruy", which means 'to mix'. This plant belongs to the coffee family (Rubiaceae) and is regularly mixed into Ayahuasca brews.

Chacruna contains DMT tryptamines. This substance produces both hallucinatory and hypnotic effects. That is why chacruna is often mixed in Ayahuasca brews with Banisteriopsis caapi. The MAO inhibiting (monoamine oxidase) effect in caapi ensures that the chacruna is activated after being taken orally. Chacruna induces a psychedelic experience. This shamanic plant species is often used in the Santo Daime religion to perform their sacraments.

Traditional use with MAO inhibitors

If chacruna is used as an ingredient in Ayahuasca, it is usually combined with a plant species that contains MAO-inhibiting properties. Otherwise, the psychedelic effects of the DMT (dimethyltryptamine) will not be produced. DMT is broken down by enzymes as soon as it is ingested orally. By adding a plant species that contains MAO inhibitors such as Banisteriopsis caapi, these enzymes are deactivated temporarily. This allows the hallucinatory effects of the DMT in chacruna to be produced.

Chacruna in Ayahuasca brews

Especially for beginners, chacruna is a great DMT plant species that is added to an Ayahuasca brew. The opposite is true for Diplopterys cabrerana (chaliponga), or simply chaliponga, for example. This DMT plant contains 5 to 10 times more alkaloids than Psychotria viridis (chacruna). The experience is described as particularly intense.

The dose used for Psychotria viridis (chacruna) depends on user preference and sensitivity levels. For most chacruna recipes in Ayahuasca brews, the following dose applies:

• Mild trip: 25 grams
• Normal trip: 50 grams
• Very strong trip: 75 grams

Effects and side effects

The trip intensity depends on a number of factors such as how much experience the user has with the substance. The effects for beginners are usually not that strong, as not enough experience has been accumulated yet. Some describe the effects as being similar to those of LSD or magic mushrooms. The interpretation of reality will change dramatically. Some see visions that tell them a story of themselves or about something else from the universe. The trip lasts 4 hours on average. Some also experience nausea or diarrhea. The side effects will begin to decrease as your experience increases.
