Diplopterys cabrerana (chaliponga)

Diplopterys cabrerana (chaliponga) is known for its high levels of psychedelic tryptamines DMT and 5-MeO-DMT. This plant species comes from the Amazon rainforest. Chaliponga, its most commonly used name, is cultivated by shamans as an ingredient used in Ayahuascabrews.

When chaliponga was first discovered, it was initially named Banisteria rusbyana. Not to be confused with Banisteriopsis caapi. Caapi is often added together with chaliponga to Ayahuasca brews. This is due to the MAO inhibiting properties contained in caapi. The hallucinatory infusion is widely used by indigenous shamans and has now also become very popular in Western Europe. Diplopterys cabrerana (chaliponga) is an essential part of the Worldherbals range.

Depending on the user, chaliponga is often used as a replacement for chacruna in Ayahuasca brews. The reason for this is that chaliponga is much more powerful than Psychotria viridis (chacruna). It contains no less than 5 to 10 times more alkaloids.

Use with MAO inhibitors

Most people use chaliponga together with an MAO-inhibiting plant species in Ayahuasca brews. The DMT (dimethyltryptamine) in the chaliponga induces the desired visionary experience, but only when used in combination with an MAO inhibitor. DMT is broken down by enzymes as soon as it is ingested orally. By adding a plant species that contains MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors such as Banisteriopsis caapi, these enzymes are deactivated temporarily. This allows the DMT in the chaliponga to do its job in the Ayahuasca brew.

Dose and effects

For Diplopterys cabrerana (chaliponga), the dose also depends on personal preference and sensitivity levels. Chaliponga is known for its intense effects. You experience a radical change in the way you interpret the world around you. Your sensory perceptions also enter another dimension. For most Ayahuasca brew recipes, the following dose applies:

• Mild trip: 5 grams
• Normal trip: 10 grams
• Very strong trip: 15 grams
