IntroductionEchinopsis pachanoi (syn. Trichocereus pachanoi), known as San Pedro cactus, is a fast-growing columnar cactus native to the Andes Mountains. It is widely grown as an ornamental cactus. It has been used for healing and religious divination in the Andes Mountains region for over 3,000 years. It is sometimes confused with its close relative, Echinopsis peruviana (Peruvian torch cactus).
The San Pedro cactus contains a number of alkaloids, including the well-studied chemical mescaline. Mescaline (3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine) is a psychedelic drug and entheogen, which is also found in some other species of genus Echinopsis (i.e. Echinopsis lageniformis, Echinopsis peruviana, and Echinopsis scopulicola) and the species Lophophora williamsii (peyote). Anecdotal evidence suggests that the highest concentration of active substances is found in the layer of green photosynthetic tissue just beneath the skin
Effects of San PedroUsers typically experience visual hallucinations and radically altered states of consciousness, often experienced as pleasurable and illuminating but occasionally is accompanied by feelings of anxiety or revulsion. Other effects include: open and closed eye visualizations, euphoria, dream-like state, laughter and a psychedelic experience.
Like most psychedelic hallucinogens, mescaline is not physically addictive. Mescaline containing cacti can induce severe vomiting and nausea, which adds an important part to traditional Native-American or Shaman ceremonies as it is considered cleansing.
DosingFresh cacti contain about 400mg mescaline per 400g (about 0.12% mescaline per gram of cactus). 100g dried cacti contains about 250mg mescaline (about 0.2 - 0.3% mescaline per gram of cactus).
Typical doses of mescaline are:
- 150 mg Minimum dose.
- 150 - 300 mg light to moderate dosage
- 300 - 400 mg strong trip last 6 - 12 hours
- 450 - 500 mg possible ego dissolution, trip will last about 12 hours
- 500 - 600 mg definite ego dissolution , trip can last up to 24 hours

This is the case in the USA, Australia, Canada, Sweden, Germany, New Zealand, and Norway, where it is currently legal to cultivate the San Pedro cactus for gardening and ornamental purposes, but not for consumption.
